Scrutiny Panel to ask questions about loss of airline Blue Islands

The Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel is concerned that the airline Blue Islands has suspended trading and that the company is currently considering its options.The airline announced on Friday 14 November that it was cancelling all future flights to and from Jersey.
The Panel confirms that it did not receive any early indication from the Minister for Sustainable Economic Development that the airline was in trouble and it is currently being brought up to speed on the situation via States Members briefings.
Deputy Montfort Tadier, Chair of the Panel, said: ‘The announcement came as a shock to Islanders, especially so close to the Christmas period. It is understandable that many are now looking for answers as to why this decision was made and what led up to it. As a Panel, we will be working closely with our colleagues in Government to ensure that Islanders get the answers they are looking for.’
‘We will be asking the Minister for Sustainable Economic Development for more details about the financial arrangements that were in place, and that were being considered once the company made Government aware that it was experiencing difficulties. We also want to better understand the underlying policies that are in place for managing relationships between Government and operators, such as Blue Islands, to ensure that all processes have been followed.
Our thoughts are currently with all of those employees who have been affected by this decision, as well as members of the travelling public, and are pleased to see that support is available to help them through this difficult time.’
The Panel will meet later this week to consider the options that are available to them, which may include an urgent Public Hearing with the Minister, officers and airport officials. Further announcement will be made in due course.
