Scrutiny Panel to question ferry firm DFDS in a public hearing

The ferry firm DFDS will face questions from the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel in an upcoming public hearing which is being held as part of a review into the terms of Jersey’s ferry contract.The Panel recently announced a review of the concession agreement to assess whether it will achieve the operation, service and economic outcomes expected by Islanders. It will explore in more detail some of the initial issues that have been raised since the Government awarded DFDS the contract in December 2024.
Islanders are being asked to share their views on the economic impact they have seen since the service was introduced in March this year. This includes experiences relating to service levels, pricing, accessibility and the transportation of pets and animals. Business are being encouraged to share any experiences or views relating to the supply of freight, freight pricing and the resilience of the supply chain.
Deputy Montfort Tadier, the Chair of the Panel, said: ‘The Government has entered an agreement with DFDS which will be in place for the next 20 years. Therefore, it is vital that we are given a clear explanation of how the terms of the contract will be delivered and what this will look like in practice for residents, visitors and businesses. This review aims to identify any areas that could be of concern in future and to ensure that appropriate and timely consideration is given to them to prevent problems from arising. As the agreement has been signed between the Government and DFDS, it is therefore essential we understand DSDF’s interpretation of what their obligations are under the terms of the concession agreement, and we are grateful that they have agreed to answer our questions in a public setting.’
