Young Islanders encouraged to join Jersey Youth Assembly

Young people aged between 14-19 years old are encouraged to register to take part in the Jersey Youth Assembly (JYA) ahead of its first meeting of the new school year.The meeting will be held in the States Chamber on Tuesday 22 September from 4-5.30pm. Doors open from 3.45pm and JYA team members will be on hand to welcome newcomers and returning Members. The first meeting is an opportunity to get to know other attendees and take part in a variety of activities to learn more about the JYA and what Members can get involved in.
The JYA is a platform for young Islanders to engage directly with elected States Members on the issues most important to them. JYA membership provides opportunities outside of school or college to develop new skills, build confidence and boost university and job applications.
Highlights of current JYA Members’ experience so far include:
- Having the power to suggest and decide what work the JYA focuses on
- Interviewing Jersey’s Chief Minister
- Asking government Ministers questions about topics that matter to young people in Jersey
- Visiting the UK Parliament and delivering a speech in the House of Commons
Pip Oliver, Education Manager at the States Greffe, said: ‘Since the launch of the JYA last year, we’ve been impressed with the number of young people who have immersed themselves in the activities on offer. The JYA is a brilliant chance to have your voice heard by Jersey’s decision-makers and we’d love to see lots of new faces at the first session of this school year for a taster of what you can do if you take part. As a flexible initiative, Members are in control of how much involvement they have so that it fits with their studies and other commitments.
