The Minister for Justice and Home Affairs presents the following statistics for the year 2025:

Summary

For the fourth consecutive year the number of deaths occurring in Jersey exceeded than the number of births in Jersey in 2025 (by 186). This numeric difference has been rising since 2022 when deaths outnumbered births for the first time. In 2025 there was a 2% increase in the number of deaths and a 2.5% decrease in births. The number of births occurring in Jersey continues to be the lowest since 1945, and is 30% decrease since 2015 with an average of 58 births per month, 99% of which took place at Jersey General Hospital. An average of 74 deaths occurred per month in Jersey in 2025 with a greater proportion than ever resulting in cremation (84% of all deaths). There was an 8% decrease in the number of marriages solemnised in Jersey in 2025, the most popular venue for marriage being the Office of the Superintendent Registrar (37% of all marriages). There was a continued increase in the number of civil marriage - 84% of marriages solemnised in Jersey in 2025 were in civil ceremonies and 16% in religious ceremonies.

1. Births

1. Actual births

A total of 698 births occurred in Jersey in 2025. This represents the number of live births of babies born in Jersey between 1st January 2025 and 31st December 2025.

This comprised of 333 females (48%) and 365 males (52%) – the seventh year in a row that more males were born than females.

There were 18 fewer births in Jersey in 2025 than in 2024 i.e. a 2.5% decrease. This is 30% fewer births compared to the number of births that occurred in 2015 and the lowest number of births recorded since 1945.

On average 58 births occurred per month in 2025. The lowest number of births occurred in February 2025 i.e. 48 births. The highest number of births occurred in June and October I.e. 70 births.

99% of all births in Jersey occurred at the General Hospital, i.e. 691. The remaining 1% of births in Jersey occurred at a location other than the General Hospital, i.e. 7 - this is 7 fewer than in 2024.

2. Registered births

The number of registered births (including re-registrations of birth) in Jersey in 2025 was 742.

This represents the number of live births which were registered or re-registered by the Superintendent Registrar between 1st January 2025 and 31st December 2025 i.e. the operational productivity of the service in relation to births.

There were therefore 15 fewer registrations of birth than in 2024, i.e. a decrease of 2%. The proportion of births registered to married parents was 58%.

There were 884 deaths which occurred in Jersey between 1st January 2025 and 31st December 2025 – 21 more than in 2024 (i.e. a 2% increase)

47% (i.e. 419) of those who died in 2025 were male and 53% (i.e. 465) were female. On average 74 deaths occurred per month in 2025.

The highest number of deaths occurred in Jersey in January 2025 i.e. 116 deaths. The lowest number of deaths occurred in Jersey in September 2025 i.e. 58 deaths.

A death occurred in every parish in Jersey in 2025. The highest number of deaths occurred in the parish of St Helier i.e. 567 deaths. The lowest number of deaths occurred in the parish of St Mary i.e. 2 deaths.

2. Registered Deaths

There were 882 deaths registered in Jersey in 2025.

There were 5 more deaths registered in 2025 than in 2024, a 1% increase. This is the highest number of deaths registered in Jersey since 1995.

3. Explanation of Cause of Death in Registration of Death

A doctor qualified in law to certify a death, is required by law to certify the condition or conditions which caused a person's death. This certification is carried out immediately following a death and then forwarded to the Superintendent Registrar. In other cases, the Viscount provides confirmation to the Superintendent Registrar of the medical conditions which caused the death following further investigation and/or inquest.

Once established, these conditions are then registered as Cause of Death' on a death registration by the Superintendent Registrar.

Cause of Death' within a death registration sets out four separate, but related, sections for the recording of these conditions as follows:

1a. The disease or condition that lead to the death

1b. Due to or as a consequence of []

1c. Due to or as a consequence of []

2. Other significant conditions contributing to the death

A Cause of Death must include a condition in 1a. and may include conditions(s) in any of the other sections (or be blank in some sections if not relevant).

Cause of Death' on a death registration therefore represents a comprehensive narrative of all the conditions that caused the death of the person.

Only those conditions which caused the death are certified as a cause of death and registered as a Cause of Death' on the death registration, i.e. not all conditions which a person suffers with at the time of death will or should be certified/registered – only those that caused the death.

Due to the legal process involved with the registration of death, death registrations are carried out several days following the actual date of death once all information is received and verified by the Superintendent Registrar. In the case of deaths subject to Inquest by the Viscount, this time period will be significantly longer.

4. Burial and cremation

Note: some deaths which occur in Jersey result in the repatriation of bodies to other jurisdictions for burial or cremation and do not form part of these statistics. Similarly, some deaths which occur outside Jersey result in the repatriation of bodies from other jurisdictions for burial or cremation in Jersey and these do not form part of the below statistics.

3. Stillbirths

There was 1 stillbirth in the Island in 2025 – one fewer than occurred in 2024.

This represents the number of births of babies born at 24 weeks or more gestation who were born without signs of life.

The births of these babies are registered separately to live births under specific legal provisions.

4. Marriage

1. Marriage in Jersey

The following statistics include marriages authorised by the Dean of Jersey (as the authority for marriage for the Church of England in Jersey) and the Superintendent Registrar (as the authority for marriage in all other religious denomination settings and for civil marriage in Jersey).

The total number of marriages authorised by both the Dean of Jersey and the Superintendent Registrar are combined to provide the total number of marriages which took place in Jersey in 2025.

Total number of marriages

There were a total of 349 marriages solemnised in Jersey in 2025. This is 32 fewer than 2024 i.e. 8% fewer marriages than in 2024.

This number includes every marriage solemnised in Jersey i.e. 291 civil marriages, 2 conversions from civil partnership to marriage, 45 Church of England marriages and 11 other religious denomination marriages.

Marriages authorised by the Superintendent Registrar (Civil and Non-Anglican religious marriage)

The Superintendent Registrar authorised a total of 302 marriages in 2025 – i.e. civil and non- Anglican religious marriages. This is 28 fewer than in 2024, i.e. an 8% decrease.

There were 8% fewer civil marriages authorised by the Superintendent Registrar, i.e. 291 of the 302 marriages authorised by the Superintendent Registrar in 2025 were civil marriages.

There were 21% fewer religious denomination marriages authorised by the Superintendent Registrar in 2025, i.e. 11 were religious denomination marriages.

Civil / religious marriage statistics

There was an 8% decrease in the number of civil marriages in Jersey in 2025 and a 12.5% decrease in the number of religious marriage ceremonies compared to 2024.

There were 291 civil (i.e. non-religious) marriage ceremonies in Jersey in 2024 – 25 fewer than in 2024.

In total 84% of all marriages which took place in Jersey were civil (non-religious) marriage ceremonies.

43% of all civil marriages in Jersey in 2025 took place at the Office of the Superintendent Registrar, i.e. 125 out of 291 civil marriage ceremonies in Jersey in 2025, 10 fewer than in 2024.

In total, there were 56 religious marriages solemnised in Jersey in 2025, 8 fewer than in 2024.

In total 16% of all marriages which took place in Jersey were solemnised within religious marriage ceremonies.

Of these ceremonies –

• 45 marriages were conducted in Church of England churches - 5 fewer than in 2024 (a 10% decrease).

• 7 marriages were conducted in Catholic churches – 3 fewer than in 2024.

• The remaining 4 religious marriages occurred in other denomination ceremonies – the same number as in 2024.

The most popular months for marriage in Jersey were August and September.

2. Conversion to marriage / Conversion to Civil Partnership

Following amendments to the Marriage and Civil Status (Jersey) Law 2001 (which came into force on 1st July 2018), couples in valid civil partnerships are able to convert their civil partnership to marriage.

2 conversion to marriage (from civil partnership) ceremonies was solemnised in Jersey in 2025, 1 fewer than in 2024.

0 conversion to civil partnership (from marriage) ceremonies were solemnised in Jersey following a change in the law in March 2023 to allow such conversions.

3. Marriage of Jersey residents in other jurisdictions

The number of Jersey resident couples who applied to the Superintendent Registrar to marry in jurisdictions outside the Island in 2025 was 12 i.e. 1 more than in 2024. The most popular destinations for marriage were Greece and Italy.

4. Marriage of non-Jersey residents in Jersey

The number of non-Jersey resident couples who travelled to Jersey in 2025 for the purpose of marriage by authorisation of the Superintendent Registrar was 55.

This was 12 fewer couples than in 2024 and made up 18% of all civil and non-Anglican marriages that were authorised by the Superintendent Registrar in 2025.

The largest proportion of non-residents who travelled to Jersey to marry came from England. The most popular months for non-residents to marry in Jersey were May and August.

5. Civil Partnership

In 2025, there were 4 civil partnership ceremonies in Jersey – 4 fewer than in the previous year.

The figures for births shown above are the number of births registered in each year, which includes re-registration of births under the Marriage and Civil Status (Jersey) Law 2001 (by date of registration, irrespective of their date of birth); and the number of children actually born in Jersey each year (i.e. by date of birth, between 1st January and 31st December in each year).
2. The table includes civil partnerships from April 2012 onwards, and conversions to marriage from 1st July 2018 onwards.
3. The figures for deaths shown above represent the number of registered deaths in Jersey (by date of registration irrespective of their date of death) and the number of deaths that actually occurred in Jersey in each year (i.e. date of death between 1st January and 31st December in each year).
