WQ.204/2026

WRITTEN QUESTION TO THE CHAIR OF THE STATES EMPLOYMENT BOARD

BY DEPUTY M.B. ANDREWS OF ST. HELIER NORTH

QUESTION SUBMITTED ON MONDAY 12th OCTOBER 2026

ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON MONDAY 19th OCTOBER 2026

Question

"Will the Chair advise the number of Jersey public sector workers who currently reside outside Jersey, and explain why employing people who live overseas is deemed appropriate?"

Answer

Public sector employees appointed on permanent or fixed-term contracts are required to reside in Jersey as a condition of their employment.

On occasion, and in exceptional circumstances, individuals may work remotely from outside of Jersey for a temporary and pre-agreed period due to personal circumstances or specific operational requirements. The number of public sector workers residing outside of Jersey is currently less than twenty. Such arrangements are subject to approval and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This includes a small team of External Relations staff, which relates to the island's representation overseas and remains important to maintain political and commercial links.
