Is it fair that the licensed commercial fishermen have limits placed on their catches but leisure anglers do not? Are some leisure anglers exploiting this situation to make some extra income at the expense of the local commercial fishermen? Will bag limits stop this and in addition help to preserve some fish stocks?

The Economic Affairs Scrutiny Panel plans to review the proposal to limit leisure anglers' catches of bass to 5 per person per day, ormers to 20 per person per day and lobsters to 5 per person per day or 5 per vessel per day. The proposals are designed to help protect the interests of commercial fishermen, rectify the disparity in the current situation and in part help conserve ormer stocks, whilst at the same time denying nobody the right to fish.
