Good afternoon. I am writing to you as an extremely concerned medical cannabis patient in Jersey. I am prescribed medical cannabis for anxiety and insomnia and as such I use it exclusively in the evening, never during the day.
Under the new draft law, however, I would still run the risk of losing my driving licence if tested, since the existing drug testing technology will still show a positive result up to 48 hours later, possibly even longer.
This is despite any possible impairing effects having worn off after 3 to 4 hours at most, in my case, whilst I was actually asleep, nowhere near a car... Without a medical defence (as is available in the UK and many other jurisdictions) I will be left with very few options. Give up my career as an [REDACTED] and in all probability lose my house as I will not be able to pay the mortgage. Give up the one medication I have found that actually lets me sleep, without long term addictive and damaging consequences, carry on until I inevitably have a breakdown due to chronic lack of sleep (this has happened before and is the reason I am prescribed cannabis).
Or, break the law and hope for the best. All this despite never having actually driven in an impaired state, which is the entire point of this draft bill. Surely you can see that this would be a gross injustice and would unfairly impact every single medical cannabis patient on the island? I would urge you to please undertake a review of this legislation before it ruins the lives of approximately 6% of the working population of the island.
