Further to Written Question 351/2025 regarding a scheme of mandatory post-release probation supervision first recommended in 2017, will the Minister provide an update on the progress of legislation, which was awaiting drafting capacity in 2025, and advise when this legislation will be brought forward?

Development work on a system of post-custodial supervision has continued since my predecessor answered that question in September last year. There has been continuing engagement with the Law Officers' Department and the Legislative Drafting Office to ensure that the work can be progressed as soon as drafting capacity is allocated. I expect that we will be able to deliver this legislation in 2027 barring any unforeseen issues.

I thank the Minister for her answer and a clear date in 2027. Of course, finalising drafting instructions and bringing the law forward does not cover the delivery of mandatory post-release supervision in practice. Could the Minister confirm whether she intends to bid for funding for implementation for the next Budget or the 2028 Budget?

I thank the Deputy for the question. Yes, as was mentioned in the previous question, this legislation will not be brought forward before sufficient resources are allocated to the Probation Service to perform the function.
