COMMENTS Members are asked to reject this amendment.
The Council of Ministers have put forward a clear and costed plan for 2027 to provide immediate relief to support families, and are already working with community stakeholders to deliver evidence-based policy solutions to ease cost-of-living pressures for 2028 onwards.
This will include targeted action, with particular attention to households under greatest financial strain, while also tackling the underlying causes of Jersey's affordability challenge.
The amendment asks Ministers to reduce essential living costs. However, Members will be aware of the international economic context within which Jersey operates. The Government of Jersey cannot control many of the price pressures facing Islanders, as these are impacted by the uncertain international context and issues such as global fuel prices, for instance. However, Ministers will take actions within its powers to make a real difference to households. This will include both targeted support and ensuring that policies, charges, taxation and regulatory decisions mitigate as par as possible the impact on living costs.
Ministers have prioritised measures to ease cost of living pressures, with immediate action in 2027 and more action in 2028.
Crucially, Ministers have also ensured that the Common Strategic Policy is heavily focused on growing our local economy.
While wages have increased slightly in real terms recently, more support will be required to ease affordability pressures. Growing the economy to create jobs and encourage entrepreneurship will lead to improved wages and better public services for all. It is essential to addressing the affordability challenges of our generation.
As affordability issues are already central to the CSP, Ministers ask Members to reject this amendment.
